18/06/02 - DARTS hosts visit from Victoria State Government of Australia
On 18th June 2002, DARTS hosted a visit to Daresbury by a delegation from the Victoria State Government of Australia. The announcement of funding of the Australian synchrotron project, at Monash University in Melbourne, had been made with expectations that a significant proportion of the project's future income would be derived from commercial access to beamlines. The meeting was to discuss the methods in place to encourage the use of synchrotron sources by industry. Feedback received since the meeting has indicated that the business oriented approach being employed by the DARTS group at Daresbury Laboratory was far in advance of that at any other synchrotron source visited.
17-18/04/02 - Chinese Biotech Mission to the UK
In April 2002 a party of 8 Chinese delegates from Liaoning
visited Daresbury during their tour of organisations in the UK, Germany, France
and Belgium. The main objectives of the mission were for the delegates to acquaint
themselves with EU managerial systems and to form collaborative links. They
were also interested in the concept of "clustering" as a method of
promoting focused investment and in building relations with their EU counterparts
in the areas of R&D, technology transfer, trade and investment. Photos are
available here.
08/07/02 - DARTS Adds New Facilities
. . . for Surface Science:
MEIS - Want to know what's just below the surface?
You can now access the Daresbury Medium Energy Ion Source (MEIS) through DARTS. This technique complements the existing X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) facility in probing atomic composition and binding states in surface zones to depths of 400nm.
. . . for FRRF:
Daresbury has recently installed the Free Radical Research Facility (FRRF) equipment from the Christie Hospital. The kit has been commissioned and is operational. It can be used to study free radicals and access is available through DARTS.
. . . Micro-Machining:
The Daresbury synchrotron has a beamline with the ideal X-ray energy for the LIGA process used to manufacture microsystems parts. The process is superior to photolithography in achieving greater aspect ratios in the vertical dimension ('2½ D') and greater precision. DARTS is your point of contact for making microparts by the LIGA process.
Congratulations to Liz Towns-Andrews! After three years as DARTS General Manager Liz has moved within CCLRC to a position in the Corporate Strategy team. Liz's main responsibility will be for implementing, on Daresbury site, the outcomes of the Cabinet Office's Quinquennial Review of CLRC operations. Elizabeth MacLean has taken on the position of General Manager.
Other personnel changes have occurred in the DARTS Sales Team as follows:
Jane Whittington has joined from Synchrotron Radiation Department to take on the co-ordination of our project to achieve ISO 17025 accreditation which forms part of the expansion plans for DARTS - see DARTboard issue 3 in 'documents' elsewhere on this site.
Mark Roberts has joined the Chemicals and Specialities Sector Sales Team from X-Ray Diffraction facility group in Synchrotron Radiation Department.
Both Jane and Mark have worked at Daresbury for several years and will strengthen the team as we continue to grow.
